The Biochemistry of Magnesium Deficiency*

چکیده
Information concerning the minimum intake which will maintain the well being of the animal is an important item in the evaluation of the nutritional significance of a dietary component. As will be brought out below, a fixed value cannot be given for the minimum requirement of a given element. The amount required will be found to vary with varying conditions of the life history of the animal, and also in relation to the intake of other components of the diet. To obtain an estimate of the minimum magnesium requirement for the rat, we have attempted to determine the lowest magnesium level in the diet at which animals grow and reproduce normally and are maintained in a state of good health otherwise. In connection with this work it was found that the dietary calcium level has a very important effect in altering the minimum magnesium requirement. Certain data were already available which gave a clue to the amount of magnesium necessary to meet the needs of the rat dur-

Role of magnesium in hypertension.
Magnesium affects blood pressure by modulating vascular tone and reactivity. It acts as a calcium channel antagonist, it stimulates production of vasodilator prostacyclins and nitric oxide and it alters vascular responses to vasoactive agonists. Magnesium deficiency has been implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension with epidemiological and experimental studies demonstrating an inverse cor...
متن کاملImpact of Magnesium Deficiency on Pancreatic β-Cell Function in Type 2 Diabetic Nigerians
Objective: Pancreatic b-cell dysfunction is described to be present at the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and progressively deteriorated with disease duration. However, its progression is variable and potentially influenced by several factors. The Magnesium (Mg) deficiency mediates insulin resistance but reports regarding its role in pancreatic β-cell dysfunction are scarce and co...
متن کاملEffect of magnesium on prevention of diabetic vessel complication (review article)
Introduction: Magnesium is the second intracellular and fourth common action in the body. Magnesium deficit has been described in patients with type I diabetes. Hypomagnesemia can also be the cause for some clinical diseases such as diabetes. Some researches showed that plasma magnesium level decreases after diabetes induction. Some research believed that magnesium deficiency is a risk factor f...
متن کاملAminophylline Infusion Induced Excretion of Magnesium During Magnesium Loading Test in Critically Ill Patients
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Mg deficiency and effect of aminophylline infusion on urine magnesium concentration after magnesium loading test (MLT). To determine serum Mg, venous blood specimens were obtained just before the first MLT. Two MLTs were performed. The first one was done before starting aminophylline infusion and the 2nd one was done du...
متن کاملMagnesium in depression.
Magnesium is one of the most essential mineral in the human body, connected with brain biochemistry and the fluidity of neuronal membrane. A variety of neuromuscular and psychiatric symptoms, including different types of depression, was observed in magnesium deficiency. Plasma/serum magnesium levels do not seem to be the appropriate indicators of depressive disorders, since ambiguous outcomes, ...
متن کاملEvaluation of serum magnesium in type II diabetic patients
Abstract Background and Objective: Some studies show that, there is a relationship between decrease of serum magnesium (Mg) level and the insulin resistance in diabetic type II patients. The aim of this study was to compare the Mg level in in type II diabetic with non-diabetic individuals. Materials and Methods: Diabetic patients(n=35) and control group (n=35),<35 years old, were randomly selec...
